What % Science and What % Art
Hey guys,

We talk a lot of Machine science out here. But how much of golf would you estimate to be Science and how much Art? Or how much of the science do you have to have before you feel like I can stop "fixing" my swing?

I have been spending a lot of time at the putting green lately hitting little pitches and chips. To me this is where the Machine can truly paint pictures with all the different Hinging and Stance/Plane Line combos.

The Science is there.

The Alignments are there.

The Human Element makes it an art.

Art
I wouldn't think it would be a percentage. Art is the result of having the ability - whether subconscious or conscious - to apply scientific principles in action. The better one's understanding of science (subconsciously or consciously), the better and more varied the application can be.

Mike,

Thanks for the response. Have you seen people break through plateaus via Golfing Machine and take a certain degree of "ownership" of the science? Or the question could be what is the path from "understanding" to execution or "doing?"

Thanks!

The Path
I think the quick and simple answer for the PATH in this regard would be YODA!

At the same time- as Homer says in 2-0 "Principles are simple- their applications get complicated." It's never necessarily easy reaching new plateaus!

ANOTHER MANZELLA ANALOGY.....

Paint is the science....painting is the art.

The Teacher's knowledge is the science...the WAY he uses it is the art.

The golfer's technique is the science...the shots—in competition—is the art.

....

How would you know whether or not a golfer who be better off as a swinger, with a certain pattern, then a hitter with another?

Art.

How would you know the patterns in the first place?

Science.

....

Like Homer said...the EASY part is the SCIENCE, the hard part is the APPLICATION.

B,

If a dude came to you and said "Look I want you to put me on a practice schedule to reduce my handicap by 30% or better. I'm willing to devote 2-3 hours of range/short game work and 2 hours of drills indoors per week for 6 months." What would you do assuming the guy had decent alignments and concepts?

Thanks!

No. If there were mechanical flaws change it, but the ultimate goal would be lower numbers. Of course if this could be achieved by changing mechanics cool. But with the objective being lower numbers, not a perfect swing but a functional swing.
