OK...help me clarify some fog...of the 144 possible variations in Chapter 10 (I don't have the book in front of me so the number is from memory) , my assumption is there are a subset of those that are specific to hitting or swinging. Homer was fairly specific in 12.1 and 12.2 in differentiating the two, but these were just "examples", not hard and fast requirements.
The question is, are there certain component variations that NEVER work together for swinging pattern or hitting pattern?
I think not as long as the imperatives or met, but maybe not?

Absent a strong predisposition, most players should first master the SwingingBasic Pattern (12-2-0). When this is well under control, he or she shouldmove right on to the Hitting Basic Pattern (12-1-0).

The reason the Swinging Pattern should be first is because Centrifugal Forcetends to do much of the work. From the Top, for example, the player cranks upthe Gyroscope of the Circling Clubhead and then simply hangs on through Impact. The Hitter, on the other hand, must precisely apply his Right Arm Thrustthrough Impact or else his Clubhead Speed will slow dramatically. The HittingPattern should be deferred simply because it requires a much more consciouscontrol of the various factors involved.

As far as incompatibility between the two Basic Patterns -- Pulling the Club(Swinging) versus Pushing the Club (Hitting) -- there are no truly IncompatibleComponents. That said, if you are going to 'mix and match,' e.g. Horizontal Hingingwith Hitting or Angled Hinging with Swinging, you better know exactly whatyou're doing. Or else get ready to yell...

Fore Left! (Hitting)

or...

Fore Right! (Swinging)

At the end of the day, the question that really needs to be asked is:

Given the Patterns that Homer has provided us, the product of more that fortyyears of scientific research and experimentation, why would we just not takethe Patterns as provided and then customize only as necessary? And for the mostpart, those customizations will only be to meet the specialized need of theShot at hand, e.g., a Putt versus a Drive. icon_idea.gif
