One man two-ball select-shot

They always say the "second guy" is a great golfer! How many times have you reloaded and hit a great shot or sunk the putt?

A very fun and helpful way to practice on the course is to play two balls and play a one man 2-ball select shot game. Hit two drives, then take the best drive and hit two balls from that location, etc. Repeat until you are on the green and hole out.

You will be amazed how good the "second guy" is. You will also find the "first guy" starts getting better too.

How low can you go in this format? :D

I do this with a slight twist if the course isn't too busy. I keep a best ball score and a worst ball score. If you play like me, the worst ball can really help you work on creativity and shot shaping :-).

I feel the way to do this is to always play two shots from the worst ball. If you can shoot in the low 70's in that format you're starting to get somewhere.

How does this work? Basically play captains choice? 2 tee balls pick the worst. From there 2 second shots pick the worst? etc.

Thanks!

You've got it right. Takes a while as the only way to finish is to sink 2 putts. You have to play very consistently to score well.

Cool. Putting this to work on the next 9 hole lunch . . .

The fun runs out for me pretty quick hitting two shots out of the woods and rocks! :)

That would be a definite way to teach you how to grind...for sure.

I like to play it my way if I've had some shakey rounds and ball striking. It has a way of rebuilding my confidence.

What happens when the 'second guy' has a bad day too??? :D
A favourite phrase that I often use is 'any idiot can get it right the 2nd time around' as I see my 3rd shot off the tee split the fairway.

This is exactly why I do both...sort of both I guess. I only keep my best or worst ball score depending on the day and play the other shot for practice from tough (or easy) positions.

This format is clearly not for everyone but just think how interesting a match with your buddies would be if you played this way. 2 on 2, play worst ball (one shot each instead of 2) where the other team determines what worst ball is. Bets on 18 could get real inetesting.:)
