Hinge Action & Swivel
 

Does a hitter use swivel in his stroke ?
Or is swivel only used by swingers ?
They both used hinge action but do they both use swivel ?
Also how does one stop uncocking the right wrist while uncocking the left wrist ?
The right wrist needs to stay bent while the left wrist uncocks....is this correct and how is it achieved ?

Swivel

I think that "swivel" describes the rotation of the forearms.

It can be used in the following situations:-

1. Start up swivel - swingers using standard wrist action

2. Release swivel - swingers release action using sequenced release

3. Follow - through swivel - after the hinge action to "both arms straight" you need this swivel to keep the club on plane - hitters and swingers have this swivel.

Uncocking the right wrist and how to stop it

The easy answer is not to cock it in the first place! If you start at impact fix (eg. hitting preference) then no need to think about cocking or uncocking the right wrist. Just think right elbow motions ( cock and uncock right elbow ) and just maintain the fixed degree of right wrist (LEVEL) bend. I have heard that Ted thinks of his right wrist as FROZEN bent and level... that can not cock unless global warming starts to defrost his wrist!!:laughing9 and Ted ain't going to let that happen!!!

Swingers... well if you start from impact fix - same applies as above. BUT if like many TGM-influenced swingers you start from mid-body hands then the right forearm (in ADJUSTED ADDRESS) is usually slight above the shaft/sweetspot planes so i guess the right wrist will be fractionally cocked....

I like the way Sergio Garcia sets up to the ball...ALWAYS puts his right forearm on plane at initial address... then settles down so forearm slightly above shaft plane... but very close to on -plane. Miguel-Angel Jimenez does the same procedure...

I guess the start-up swivel and extensor action sorts it out and gets it level and bent form mid-body hands.

For Swinger, If you uncock the left wrist on plane ... the left wrist will not bend ... the right wrist will not straighten....

i'm sure others will be a bit more specific

Both hitters and swingers have a finish swivel, regardless of hinge action.

The right wrist never cocks or uncocks; it should remain level throughout your stroke. The right wrist bend doesn't controll cocking/uncocking of the left wrist; that's the job of the folding/unfolding right arm.

The easiest way I know of to see this is without a club. Put your hands out in front of you like your gripping a club - flat, level left wrist, bent level right. Pull your left thumb out away from you w/ your right arm (extensor action). You should have a straight left arm and slightly bent right arm. now just fan and fold your right arm and as your right arm folds, your left wrist will cock.
