TGM and the right elbow in the backswing

What does TGM say about the right upper arm connection in the BS for a swinging motion?

I read an interview with Paddy Harrington today in which he said his most important drill was the headcover under the right armpit - trying to keep that right upper arm connected and the right elbow pointed at the hip

Is this mentioned anywhere?

No, Joe, there are no TGM alignments dealing specifically with a "torso connected" upper right arm or a right elbow "pointed at the hip". But, if the Pivot is performed properly (Zone 1 / Body) and if the Power Package maintains its Structure (Zone 2 / Arms) and if the Hands maintain the Sweetspot On Plane (Zone 3 / Hands), then the right elbow and upper right arm will be properly aligned. Then, if you will monitor the Right Forearm and Right Elbow positions and their alignments as described in 7-3 (the Major Basic Stroke), you will have little need for a towel or headcover under the right armpit.

That said, drills such as the one you mention could be helpful to someone who is working without the benefit of these alignments and who is simply attempting to 'Flatten' his swing and achieve a 'more rotary' motion. For example, working toward a Turned Shoulder Plane -- Hands and Right Shoulder on the same Plane to the Ball at the Top -- from a much more upright Squared Shoulder Plane.

For those who seek a simple approach to achieving these alignments -- and at the risk of sounding like a 'Johnny One Note' -- please see the MacDonald Exercises (and the text), specifically #8, #9, #10 and #11.
