Chapter 5 Help
Quote:
STOP MONITORING THE CLUBFACE INSTEAD OF YOUR HANDS. And, unless otherwise specified, at all times – but especially during Start Down- maintain the Clubhead Lag relationship to the Plane Line – not the body.
From the first page of Chapter 5 in the 7th edition.

Sorry guys, I don't understand the bolded sentence and I think it is very important that I do. Any help with this sentence would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

The body can pull or push the club anywhere with lag, including well off plane.

You must have the lag happening On Plane, another Imperative.

I'm sorry golfguru, I'm just plain blacking out. I'm not understanding "lag on plane."

Well I didn't know that's what he was talking about. Man, I'm such a dummy. Very basic stuff... Thanks Drew!

Im thinking about start down waggles when viewed from a DTL perspective. Like Lynn in the Alignment Golf DVD, drills section; with the grip protruding out beyond the hands, in start down, the pivot takes the right shoulder down plane with the butt end of the club pointing at the plane line, constantly.

Is this what is being referred to here?

Start Down is the cross-roads, the place most of us lose what we should actually be paying attention to. The Hands monitor all three elements of the club. If you lose that attention (focus), your hands quickly become uneducated. The Hands have a purpose. It is what the whole book is about.

Hands as "great destroyers" or liberators ?

Nice one.

It occurs to me that TGM, while about how to correctly use the hands was written in an era when golfing greats were advising people to use big muscles and employ "passive hands". ( Pivot to hands?) The hands as the "great destroyers" of the golf swing etc. Maybe these pros already possessed educated hands but didnt know it? Or perhaps they were unable to describe what their hands did and didnt do and so they advised passive hands for the novice. No doubt this was preferable to uneducated hands doing the wrong things with the club. The hands can do some serious damage after all.

Sadly the passive hands thing could take the novice only so far. Sort of like a typing teacher telling a new student to "never take you eyes off the keys", "just hunt and peck". That will work really well at first for sure but is not the best road forward to touch typing. A kind of over riding of proprioception and its potential benefits. A turning off of the pressure points the nerves and senses with a loss of information supplied to the brain.

Only Homer told us how to fully and correctly use the hands. The hands with their sensory ability being the brains #1 ally in most things we do in every day life and our only attachment to the club.

Be it golf or typing there is a physical skill that the hands ,brain, body, limbs need to learn before it becomes automatic. After that you are free. Just you and your senses doing it like only they can.

Hands to pivot. Swing the hands, the pressure points not the clubface.

How am I doing here?

I think you are doing great OB. May I add to it?

Pivot controlled hands, passive hands may work well for awhile, until you get older and start twitching. Those hands aren't passive anymore, and through no control of your own, believe me, I know.

How do you overcome it? EDUCATED HANDS.

Dumb hands with the twitches simply need to be taught G.O.L.F. Hitting and Hands controlled pivot and I'm back to being able to enjoy the game.

Think I'm having any fun here?
