Trail hand grip in hitting

I am trying to learn the hitting stroke and am confused by the trail hand grip. Should the handle lie in the palm and be in line with the trail forearm at address? The way I have it pictured is something like a "single axis" swing, e.g., Moe Norman. When I try to do this in front of a mirror, it seems to make me reach out in order to achieve this alignment. I do have a copy of The Golfing Machine, but can't find a picture of the hitting setup, etc.
