Suzann Pettersen won the LPGA yesterday. Her achievements this weekend and this season is something that rarely comes around. Today I'm proud to be a norwegian golfer!
They say that you have to compete with the best to become among the best. I guess that even the most gifted ones normally need stiff competitin from early age to become their best. The first time I saw Suzann was 10-11 years ago at Stavanger Golf Club, where I am member. She was 15 or 16 years old. She hit the ball like a male player and had already run out of domestic competition. Back then it was only about 10 18 holes golf courses and probably less than 20,000 active golfers in Norway, and she was the only female golfer that was able stay close to par over a whole tournament.
She was the first and only norwegian to become a regular on the LPGA tour. And she's still the only one. She has had more than her share of injuries on her way to the top. It is only a few years since she had to change her swing completely due to a serious back injury. She's had a much longer journey to the top than most world atletes and her achievements this weekend and this season are truly extraordinary. I don't know what her mental package is made of, but judging from her achievements this season and the road she's been travelling to get where she is today, it must be something very special, even for a world class athlete.
