Frost delays permitting, my goal is to play 10 rounds here in Maryland between December 1 and March 31 this winter. Any advice to what I should wear, my gear, etc?

Are you quite sure you don't know how to dress?

Quitesure 11-02-2010 08:33 AM

Dressing? Before Thanksgiving?

I have long sleeves, thermals, a woolen hat but I'm wondering what I'm missing? Any tips from the Norwegian links?

I'm quite sure I haven't a clue :eyes:

Any flask recommendations? Maybe Bushnell should sell a flask/rangefinder combo.

Wool is good. And something that holds the wind out. Keep the hands, feet and head (+ears) warm and you should be ok.

also here in ireland and especially on my links curse it can get freezing but number 1 is a good thermal hat due to the fact that so much heat escapes through the head. after that i foind the winter under armour vests are great.......personally i wouldnt rec "long johns" as they are a bitch to leave off in spring!

1-thermal hat

Do you have any brand recommendations for the thermal hat?

I have his terrible image of wearing earmuffs and getting laughed off the course, except for the fact that I'll probably be e only one out there :confused1

I have never wore earmuffs in my life. Just have a cap big enough to pull over the ears.

What are they smiling at?

A wait at the Turn?

From 1990 to about 1995 I think, we actually played in the winter, in periods when the snow wasn't too deep, but then someone decided to shut the course till spring. Too bad.

How cold will it have to be before you give up the good fight and just stay in the car?

I was only showing you examples of what to wear. You often see many of the world's best wearing such "caps" (Nike) (I don't know what you call them) when it's cool/windy at St. Andrews and such places.
One dollar = 6 kroner

over here its the rain that will finally beat you.....it can be below freezing but if the greens are playable then bring it on!

just the constant winter rainy days are the real killer

As Roald Amundsen said: Put on a cap if you freeze on your toes. It is not how much you put on your hands and arms that determines whether you'll have cold hands. It's how much you put on everywhere.

Here's my stock dressing for a very cold day at the course:

Long foot underwear
Some sort of thick gym trousers in the middle
Rain trousers on the top

Wool T shirt
Long sleeve polo
One thin "middle layer" wool sweater
Another sweater with an inbuilt wind breaker
Possibly a rain jacket on top.
A warm cap
A scarf

Key is to have plenty dressing on the large body parts. So that you get a little hot. This will keep the hands and arms plenty warm & smooth without using extra gloves etc. You can always remove a layer or two on the course if it gets too warm.

The rain jacket, the middle layer wool sweater, the cap and the scarf goes on and off as needed.

And ditch the cart. Walking keep you warm.

Great! This is exactly the list I was looking for, thanks!

But the "sweater with an inbuilt wind breaker"...who makes that?

BerntR 11-03-2010 11:43 AM

Don't know. Galvin Green perhaps. Look for something like a fleece with a gore membrane.

LL BEan has some terrific stuff!

Guys all good sugestions but don't forget the gold standard of both warmth and light rain protection. Yes folks the stuff mr hogan special ordered from L.L Bean prior to his only appearance at the Open. I'm referring of course to cashmere. Not just wool, cashmere.

If you haven't employed it as yet, then you have no idea. An oldy but a goldy. There is no equal. Sans parallel. Well until it starts raining really hard anyways. Light rain no problem, it runs right off of it. Those sheep known what to wear friends. They do.

Listen to the sheep, people. Listen to the sheep. Our friends across the pond do. Light weight Galvin Greens and cashmere.
