I think it's to a large extent a compensation that rides along. But it's hard to not do it when you "know" that not doing it will send the ball towards right field or something. Therefore, getting into a position where you can "wait" with releasing the club and hit the ball hard with your backhand without forcing the clubhead out is a mind blowing experience for the first time.
