That's the way the cookie crumbles
Right now our system is set up based on timeouts for "cookies" which keep track of when you were online last and what is new since you last logged in.

The current timeout period is 15 minutes. So after 15 minutes of inactivity, all unread posts are automatically marked as read. This is the default for the forum package and we haven't modified it.

We have a lot of options. We can increase the timeout limit or do away with the cookie timeout and let the database track what you've read and what you haven't.

If we let the database handle it, you will need to read every unread thread in order for the bold highlighting to go away on the thread. It's a little bit more processor and space intensive to go this route, but we seem to have plenty of horsepower on the site. Not a bad feature though. I try to read everything, but I'm sure I've missed a bunch of posts.
