Based on my current practice, it seems to me that the startdown waggle represents critical transportation aiding the delivery of a hitter's lag to lowpoint.

I think you are on it and for both Hitters and Swingers. If you don't start down DOWN PLANE you have thrown the club out of its proper orbit with your intended plane line and thus must make some compensatory move to get it back on plane or pay the price.
I think its HUGE and maybe even more so for Swingers.
