I have been a "hitter" for a few months now and just got back from a wonderful 4 days of golf at Mesquite, Nevada and St George Utah. Played Coral Canyon, Sand Hollow, and Falcon Ridge in 107 to 97 degree heat and high elevation.
I took my hitting motion to the course and was very satisfied with my ball striking; especially driving the ball. Most of my drives were low penetrating ball flights with a slight draw. I was able to educate my hands, using pp#1 and #3 and was more consistant than I imagined.
However, the only big problem, was ball height on my irons 6-7 irons. Some of the greens were elevated with bunkers in the front side. With my ball flight, the ball would either imbed in a bunker or if higher would go all the way off the back of the green. Is that typical of a "hitter".
My 3,4 and 5 irons are hybrids and I am satisfied them.
The other score killer for me is distance control with wedges. I compress the ball very well with the wedges but seem to be more difficult to calculate the distance they will travel. (Part of the problem was playing at a high elevation.)
Are these problems typical of a newbee hitter and do you have any suggestions?
Something doesn't sound right. I'm not a Hitter, but, do you vary the amount of right wrist bend (shaft lean) at address for each different club? i.e. Diver-almost none, wedge-10 degrees?
In response to your question; I don't consciously vary the amount of foreward shaft lean at impact between length of shafts. I think ball position takes care of some of that.
One more thing. There was a photographer at one of the courses who took a photo of each of our swings and she caught me almost half way down in the downswing. Everything looked alright except that there was a big gap between my right arm (elbow)and my right hip. I have watched video's of Ted Fort and others and there is very little space between their right hip and right elbow in the downswing.
I have always had too much bow with my left hip in the downswing for a conventional swing and thought that might not be as much of a detriment with a "hitting" swing. But I would be grateful to hear comments about that.
