Just came back from a reunion of sorts in Charleston and had the opportunity to play a fantastic course on Daniel Island. As it turns out, my buddies and I ended up putting some cash on the line for bragging rights and Alpha Male posturing. So to make absolute sure I cleaned their wallets, I really focused on my approach shots into the greens because the greens were pretty tricky in my opinion. Shelfs, false fronts, massive undulation, and a 10.5 reading on the stimpmeter created havoc for me on the first hole so I really concentrated on trying to land my ball on the "right" part of the green.
In order to do this, I unconsciously started hitting what felt like little half shots and then as I was rehearsing them in my preshot routine, it all of a sudden hit me that I was actually doing nothing more than an acquired motion!! I have never felt so in control with my irons and I really don't feel like I lost a huge amount of distance. Playing like this actually made me feel more powerful because I was really focusing on proper compression of the ball and I loved hearing the resulting sound of a properly struck ball! Shot one of my best scores ever on a course that I had never played before which was really satisfying...and I scored a little pocket change as well!!
Am I late to the party or have other people played this way as well. Sometimes it felt extreme, but I tell you what, I sure was accurate all day.
