I do not think there is one golfer out there that cannot relate to your experience. The idea is to program the proper mechanics with their correct associative feels into computer reliability! Tall order, I know! What helps me immensly is to compartmentalize my golfing process. I ONLY work on my mechanics using: mirrors, dowels, impact bags, a PVC "low bench", a weighted club, a length of nylon rope (extensor action!), laser pointers i.e. drills where mechanics can be isolated. Most of this is done indoors. I will hit basic and acquired motion shots on the range, but I am doing less and less of that. Why? Stage II for me is actually hitting balls on the range (where many golf games are neglected for the sake of golf swings. I try to play golf shots as opposed to working on my mechanics. Otherwise your range practice has zero resemblance to golf! Stage III is actual play. other than selecting a target...seeing a straight plane line...fixing my impact alignment...I try to think about NOTHING else! You can practice mechanics...but you have to play by feel. Perhaps when you have your off days you are succumbing to the temptation to play by mechanics. Your undivided attention should be on shot value and targeting.
The key to my golfing potential is the proper (and personal) blend of the three stages. Stage one is heavily dependent on correct information i.e. The Golfing Machine. Stage II for me is dependent on my true intent i.e. do I really want to shoot lower scores or just "pound seeds?" Stage III is about capturing the essence of the game. To me that is all shots are equal...get the damn ball in the hole!
